Ghandy Library
The Library of XLRI came into existence in 1949 when the Institute was established in the Steel City of Jamshedpur, Bihar. It was named after the late Sir Jehangir Ghandy in February 1972. The aim of the Library is to cater to the information needs of the Students, Researchers, Staff and Faculty Members. It is the heart of the institution and acts as a centre for the collection of literature predominantly related to labour relations, management and its allied subjects. It intends to develop a comprehensive collection of information that is useful for teaching, learning and research purposes. The Service on Doorsteps and User satisfaction are the current day approaches to any service, including library service. To keep pace with the modern developments in the arena of the library, the Library has been automated, and a unified search tool has been implemented.

The library is housed in a spacious and centrally air-conditioned building on the ground floor overlooking the administrative block. The library floor consists mainly of three sections: to the West is the Reading Room with Periodical -cum- Reference Section and to the East is the Reading Room with Stack Room -cum- Bound Volume section, housing books and bound journals and other sources. Centre of the two wings (East & West) consists of Circulation Counter -cum- Help Desk for Circulation and Support, a Central Lobby, Electronic Resources Centre, Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) Systems, Textbook Section, Notice Board and 3 Displays viz., New Arrivals, Faculty Publications and Alumni Publications.

The library is open 24x7. Our mission is to facilitate convenient and user-friendly access to current, global and relevant information by identifying, acquiring, organizing and retrieving information in various formats (print & non-print) to serve the information needs of the XLRI community to meet the teaching, learning, research, consulting, training and placement requirements.

- Institute ID card is the Library Borrowing card is not transferable
- Books should be presented physically to the library for return and renewal.
- Unless otherwise mentioned, books are issued for a mentioned period only
- If a book which has been borrowed by a student is urgently required. The library may call back the book from the student.
- Books must be returned on or before the due date
- If a book is not returned on the due date the borrower will have to pay an overdue charge: General shelf books Rs.2/- per day
- Absence and illness are not acceptable excuses for exemption from paying overdue charges.
- Only institute holidays are left out of the reckoning.
- If the due date falls on an institute holiday. the book may be returned on next working day, without any fine.
- The borrower shall be responsible for loss or damage caused to the library material borrowed.
- They shall be required to replace or pay double the cost of such material including overdue charges
- Books may be renewed if no other reader has reserved the book
- Books must be produced at the time of renewal.
- Two renewals are generally allowed at the maximum.
- Books on loan or new arrivals displayed can be reserved by filling the reservation slip available at the issue counter.
- Reservation for more than one book will be issued according to priority.
- Reserved books are kept separately in the issue counter for two days for each member.
- The reservation lapses automatically after two days. and the next person in the list of reservation gets priority.
- The membership card is not transferable and should be brought while visiting the library.
- This privilege is to visit the designated library only and not to avail of any other facilities like GYM, Playground, Parks, Walking Strip, etc., in the XLRI campus. Such misuse of the membership would lead to the immediate cancellation of this membership.
- These members should not bring any of their family, friends or relatives to the campus.
- Access to Computers, the Internet and eResources is strictly not available to these members, adhering to the intellectual property rights and agreements with those providers.
- Members are not permitted to bring any drinks (except water) or snacks etc. inside
- They should follow the usual rules of discipline and decorum (like keeping silent, avoiding using phones, etc) of the library.
- Members should keep up the discipline within the campus, too, and should show the Library Membership Card wherever it’s asked inside the campus by any XLRI Officials/Security.
- In case any library book or membership card is lost by users, the Head - Library should be informed immediately. Email ID: library.head@xlri.ac.in
- Always carry your institute ID card while visiting the library.
- Store personal belongings such as folders, bags, etc., at the property counter at the entrance.
- Only water is allowed; other drinks and snacks are not permitted inside the library.
- Maintain silence and avoid conversations that may disturb other users. Group discussions are not allowed in the main library areas; use the designated Discussion Room for such activities.
- Mobile phones should be kept in silent mode, and calls must not be attended inside the library.
- Books can be reserved and get it issued/returned at the Circulation & Help Desk Counter. Alternatively, shall do the same operations through the RFID Self-Check Out/In Kiosk.
- Borrowed items should be returned on time to avoid fines and in the interest of other users.
- Check the condition of books before issuing them and report any damage to the staff. A penalty will be imposed, or a new book will be sought for returning books in poor condition.
- Reference Books, Periodicals, New Arrivals, and Faculty & Alumni Publications are for use within the library only and cannot be issued.
- Borrowers are responsible for any loss or damage to the books they borrow.
- Inform the Head - Library immediately if a library book is lost.
- If the book is not found within two weeks, the borrower must replace it or pay double the cost of the book, including overdue fines.
- If the lost book is part of a series, the borrower may be required to replace the entire set or pay the fine mentioned above.
- Books, magazines, or journals removed from shelves should be left on reading tables after use, not reshelved by users.
- Newspapers should be neatly folded and returned to the designated display after reading.
- Book chapters and news, magazine or journal articles, can be scanned using the scanner available at the eResources Centre.
- Do not use library computer terminals for non-academic purposes.
- Standalone systems for specialized databases (e.g., Bloomberg, LSEG, Morningstar) should not be occupied for personal laptop use unless actively accessing those resources.
- Users are not permitted to disconnect or unplug library cables or peripherals to connect personal devices.
- Use the Discussion Room for group discussions or study but maintain an appropriate noise level as the room is not soundproof. Separate rules for using the Discussion Room are available both on the library website and on the space too.
- Users must take care of personal items (e.g., laptops, pen drives, wallets) and should not leave them overnight in the library. The library is not responsible for lost items.
- Unclaimed belongings will be cleared during housekeeping hours (6:00 AM – 8:30 AM) and handed to the Security Department at the Main Gate as "Lost and Found."
- Return the locker key of the property counter lockers before leaving the library for the day.
- Do not tear, mark, or highlight library materials.
- Avoid sitting on reading tables or disturbing the arrangement of chairs and tables in the reading area.
- Any form of misbehaviour, abuse, or indecent conduct may result in the loss of library privileges. The Head – Library has the authority to enforce this rule.
- Subscribed eResources are licensed for academic or research use and should not be shared with external parties to avoid copyright violations.
- All books and reading materials must be checked at the Security Checkpoint before leaving the library.
These rules aim to provide a conducive environment for study and research at the Library. Cooperation from all users is highly appreciated.
