Sir Jehangir Ghandy Library
The Library of XLRI came into existence in 1949 when the Institute was established in the Steel City of Jamshedpur, Bihar. It was named after the late Sir Jehangir Ghandy in February 1972. The aim of the Library is to cater to the information needs of the Students, Researchers, Staff and Faculty Members. It is the heart of the institution and acts as a centre for the collection of literature predominantly related to labour relations, management and its allied subjects.
It intends to develop a comprehensive collection of information that is useful for teaching, learning and research purposes. The Service on Doorsteps and User satisfaction are the current day approaches to any service, including library service. To keep pace with the modern developments in the arena of the library, the Library has been automated, and a unified search tool has been implemented.

Computerisation
Considering the huge resources and the expected fast services, Sir Jehangir Ghandy Library is fully automated with the required Hardware (RFID and EM) and Software systems. All the in-house library activities like acquisition, cataloguing, circulation, periodicals, online public access catalogues, etc, have been automated by using the library automation software system ‘Liberty’ of SoftLink Asia. A hybrid hardware system integrating the benefits of RFID (Bibliotheca) and EM (Dialoc) technologies is implemented to ensure the Self-Check Out/In of the library books 24X7. Also, the Discovery Service, a unified search system, Summon, has been incorporated.
Arrangements
The Library follows the Open Access System, which enables the readers to go directly to the bookshelves and select the books and other sources freely. This is one of the greatest advantages that the Library offers to its users. The books in the Library are arranged in two classes viz The General and Reference Collections. New books acquired are classified, catalogued and displayed for 10 days for reference and reservation at the new arrival section just opposite the Circulation Counter, and it will be available for circulation after the stipulated period. Books are arranged on shelves according to Call Numbers. When a particular book is required for a user, its Call Number and Accession Number must be correctly ascertained from the database Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) available aside from the Circulation Counter. The user can directly go to the respective shelf where the book is kept according to the Call number and pick up the book. The stack room is provided with guide cards on both sides of the shelves for easy location of the books.
Circulation Service
The library provides issue and return of books: PG students can borrow 4 books at a time for ten days, whereas Fellow students can avail of 10 books for 1 month. Full-time faculties are entitled to 50 books at a time for 3 months, and Part-time faculty can have 10 books per course for a period of 1 month, respectively. Non-teaching staff are authorized to take 4 books for one month.
