The Executive Fellow Programme in Management (EFPM) is a non-residential doctoral programme offering studies in different fields of management and functional areas. The programme has been designed to cater to the scholarly needs of working executives, managers, faculty members and researchers, who are unable to commit to a full-time residential doctoral study. The programme trains its students to become skilled and innovative researchers and teachers in management. It aims at preparing students for careers as faculty members at premier academic institutions and for positions outside academics requiring advanced research and analytical capabilities.
The FPM offered by XLRI Jamshedpur is recognized as equivalent to the Ph.D. programme of an Indian University by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
The EFPM at XLRI is an intense and rigorous full-time study programme that typically takes about four years. Only those who can commit to devoting themselves wholly and sincerely to such a study must apply for this programme. Taking long breaks of more than 1–2 of weeks during the programme, for whatever reasons, is detrimental to serious study, and is strongly discouraged by the institute. Those who are unsure of committing themselves to a full-time study as described above, are advised to refrain from applying to this programme.
An applicant to FPM/EFPM must have a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree from any university incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India, or other educational institutions established by an act of parliament or declared as Deemed-to-be-University under Section 3 of UGC act, 1956,
must have an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India or the AICTE (or)
must have an equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency that is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit, or assure quality and standards of the educational institution
More specifically, applicants with at least one of the following categories of educational qualifications, are eligible to apply to the FPM/EFPM at XLRI:
- Aa 1-year/2-semester Master’s degree after a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor's degree, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale, wherever grading system is followed,
- Ba 2-year/4-semester Master’s degree after a 3-year/6-semester Bachelor’s degree, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale, wherever grading system is followed,
- Ca 5-year Integrated Master’s degree obtained after completing higher secondary education (10+2) or equivalent, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale, wherever grading system is followed,
- Da M. Phil. degree, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale, wherever grading system is followed,
- Ea qualification declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, as for example, a professional qualification like CA, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale, wherever grading system is followed,
- Fa 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed.
- Gan equivalent qualification to any of the above, from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency that is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit, or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.
In all scenarios, a relaxation of 5% marks, or its equivalent grade, is permitted for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently-abled, economically weaker section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the University Grants Commission (UGC) from time to time.
Degree / Diploma / Certificate holders through part-time, correspondence, private appearance, or satellite-based programmes are not eligibile for applying to the EFPM.
All applicants to the FPM / EFPM doctoral programmes at XLRI Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur must write an entrance test and have a valid test score. A score in any ONE of the following entrance tests is considered valid for this purpose:
All applicants to the FPM / EFPM are automatically screened for taking the XSET (there is no separate application). A candidate, who fulfills the basic eligibility criteria for FPM / EFPM, will receive a notification along with the admit card for taking the XSET.
Candidates who have taken the NET or the GATE and have a valid score (as described above) may also apply for admission to the FPM / EFPM. They must indicate the score obtained in the application form and upload a copy of the official scorecard along with the application.
XLRI offers nine areas of specialization:

When applying for admission, the candidate must indicate a primary area and a secondary area of interest.
Important: Apply to General Management Area only if you are integrated in doing research in Entrepreneurship / Law / Communication / Ethics.
EFPM students will do courses conducted in the XLRI Jamshedpur campus, over four campus visits, spread over a period of about 2 years. Each campus visit is of about 20 days duration. Besides the campus visits, at least 3-5 additional campus visits will normally be needed. These visits are meant for the Comprehensive Qualifying Examination (CQE), presenting a research seminar, presenting and defending the thesis proposal and for defending the thesis.
At the end of the coursework, the FPM student must appear in and pass the Comprehensive Qualifying Examination (CQE) that tests the student’s learning obtained from the coursework and their preparedness for rigorous academic research. The student is given two chances to pass the CQE, failing which s/he will be asked to withdraw from the programme.
The EFPM student is expected to complete the programme in about 4 years. The maximum permissible time for the completing the programme completion is 8 years. Students failing to complete the requirements within this time period will be deemed to have withdrawn from the program and their candidature in the programme will be closed.
The student is conferred the title "Fellow in Management" of XLRI on successful completion of all the requirements of the programme.
