Social Impact
The student societies at XLRI take up several social initiatives round the year. XLRI encourages its students to be socially sensitised and to contribute their mite for the upliftment of the underserved sections of the society. The student committees organise awareness drives, workshops for schoolchildren, counselling sessions and literacy programmes among others. They also work with local NGOs to reach out to nearby villages of Jamshedpur.

A committee known for organising events with a difference. Take Jamshedpur Run for example - flagged off by Prof Ashis Pani (Dean Academics), the flagship XL marathon event which draws participants of all ages not only from within XLRI, but also attracts the lovely people of Jamshedpur who have been closely associating with this event and participate every year enthusiastically.
Or how about the nail-biting Silent Auction, where everything and anything is on offer - right from stuff from graduating seniors, to a lesson in ukulele. From professors to students, everyone has something to offer, and something to bid upon. INR 95k collected from the auction was donated to Indian Cancer Society. This is what makes Diwali, XL wali Diwali.
Think EV and then add the perfect measure of business acumen into it and here is where you get Tycoon’s Gambit which CII-Yi organises with EV. In this battle of wits, teams give their all while running business simulations, owning businesses and making decisions - just like a tycoon would do.
In the hands of the child, lies the future of our world, and to celebrate the untapped potential of children, CII-YI organised Kshitij, our flagship event where 850+ students from the underprivileged schools of Jamshedpur got a stage to display their talent at a city level scale. This event also recognises the talent of students by awarding them with scholarships. From poetry to drama, dance, storytelling, yoga, beat-boxing and rapping, they have all kinds of talent. A truly enriching and humbling experience for anyone who witnesses the grandeur and magic these little bundles of joy create when they set the stage on fire. And to top it all, the smile on the faces as they leave at the end of the event is simply priceless.
Mesmerising speakers + their extraordinary stories is only at TEDxXLRI. An event which brings great minds at one stage and witness an epiphany of ‘Ideas worth spreading’. Organised by CII-YI, TEDxXLRI 2020, hosted 7 eminent speakers this year from diverse backgrounds celebrating the power of ideas.

Samarthya - The Human Potential Centre

Samarthya is the youth wing of the Centre for Education Management, Leadership and Research (CEMLR) and operates under the guidance of Father Francis Peter S.J. It was formed with the sole aim of helping the school students of Jamshedpur, their parents and their teachers deal with their emotions and help students realize their full potential. Developing a rapport with the students, acting as their guides and eventually helping them cope with various situations forms the bedrock of its very existence for the seventh year in a row.
Pragyaan Sessions
The model of Samarthya is to deliver sessions to the children of staff members of XLRI. The aim is to help students with academic learning, personality development and building a rapport with the students. Samarthya in the last year has consistently conducted weekly sessions on every Saturday since its initiation and seen a marked improvement in the learning level of the students they work with.
Career Counselling Workshop - Disha
Samarthya conducted the 4th edition of their hugely successful career counselling workshop Disha on November 5, 2018. Over 65 students from XLRI gave guidance on 40 different streams for the students of classes 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th based on the career choices that students received after giving a psychometric test. Over 600 students, parents and teachers attended the event to understand the varied possibilities available in terms of career choices.
Back to the Roots Quiz
In association with the annual fest of XLRI, Ensemble- Valhalla 2018, Samarthya hosted a school quiz for students from 9th - 12th standards - Back to The Roots Quiz. The quiz was designed on the theme of “India and Indian Culture”. The quiz is intended to increase the students’ awareness and be an interesting as well as fun learning ground for them.
Annual Conference - Reflections
Samarthya hosted Reflections ’19 - the 7th edition of their Annual Conference on 15 September, 2019. The theme of the conference this year was “Emotional Intelligence” with special emphasis on Phubbing, Multi-tasking and Empathy. The event is intended to furnish an open medium of communication between students, teachers and parents and how to provide a conducive environment for students to grow.
Janaagraha
In association with Janaagraha-Centre for Citizenship and Democracy NGO, Samarthya has conducted civic learning modules to the students of various schools in Jamshedpur. The program works towards improving the quality of life in urban India by sparking the fire of active citizenship, participation, in the students.
English Fair
“Knowledge of languages is the doorway to wisdom”
English fair targets a school where the primary language of communication is not English. The purpose of the event is to increase awareness and instill fluency and induce an appreciation for the beauty of the English language.
Science Fair
“I hear, and I forget. I see, and I remember. I do, and I understand.”
Scientists learn about their subject by observing, describing, and experimenting. Following the same philosophy, Science Fair aims to help underprivileged students of Jamshedpur in learning about Science in a fun and exciting way by the medium of experiments.

SIGMA-oikos
The Social Initiatives Group for Managerial Assistance(SIGMA-oikos) is a student run body of XLRI that focuses on transformation and change in the social sector by contributing to the community and impoverished sections of the society under the able guidance of Prof. Madhukar Shukla. It is also the Jamshedpur chapter of Switzerland based organisation: oikos-international, a student organization that seeks to strengthen sustainability-oriented initiatives among tomorrow’s leaders across the globe.
One of the most well-known activities of SIGMA is the Daan-Utsav, which brings together schools, colleges, corporates and citizens across Jamshedpur to celebrate the joy of giving through initiatives spread over the entire week. During the Joy of Giving week it conducts collection drives for necessities to be donated to rural households in the outskirts of Jamshedput and local shelter homes for the underprivileged, visits to old age homes and orphanages, blood donation camps etc.
It also conducts learning programs like Basic Computer Learning Program, Basic English Learning Program and Extra-curricular classes like singing, dancing, chess and art to help students from less privileged backgrounds. Some of its environment-related initiatives include tree plantation & cleanliness drives. It also introduced the Proud to Ride initiative in 2015 with 100 cycles at present, to aid commute within campus and contribute towards making the XLRI carbon neutral.
SIGMA-oikos also ties up with corporate houses such as TATA Steel and JUSCO to hold case study competitions wherein the best minds from top tier B-schools across the country come together to solve problems such as water conservation, plastic usage reduction and focus on renewable energy.
SIGMA collaborates with NGOs like Goonj, SEEDS, Robin Hood Army, Helping Hearts Foundation and CHUK among others to increase the reach of its initiatives. It also helps NGOs working towards livelihood generation for the disabled and underprivileged to set up stalls for selling their products in campus from time to time.
With a long term vision, it also strives to create sustainability focus in the leaders of tomorrow through the Tarapore Young Leaders Fellowship Program wherein 16 students are selected amongst school students across Jamshedpur and are given exposure to rural communities and their problems, following which they are mentored by the team to find implementable solutions to these problems.
SIGMA-oikos also works to cultivate and nourish the growing community of social entrepreneurship by providing a platform for information exchange, networking and discovery of rising figures in the field through events such as the Social Entrepreneurship Conclave wherein award-winning social entrepreneurs come and share their stories and make it a melting pot of ideas and collaboration.

Joy of giving
Fr Arrupe Centre for Ecology and Sustainability along with the students’ team SIGMA (Social Initiative Group for Managerial Assistance) organizes DaanUtsav - Jamshedpur JoyFest every year in October. During the week-long event, the XLRI students are engaged in a variety of events involving volunteerism and giving. The events organised are Vastra Samman and Ann Daan (donation of clothes and dry ration); Gift of Time (visit to Nirmal Hiruday, an old age home); Serving Those Who Serve Us (students serve food to the workers of XLRI); Wish Tree (fulfilling some of the elementary necessities of children from orphanage and old age home)

Students visited faculty and staff residences during the Joy of Giving Week and collected items. Also, SIGMA collaborated with various schools across the city of Jamshedpur which served as collection points.
Gift of Time
Nirmal Hryuday is an Old Age Home and Orphanage in Baridih, Jamshedpur, meant for those who have been abandoned by the society or their families. It is run by the Missionaries of Charity. During the Joy of Giving Week, students of XLRI visited them, took sweets, provisions for a month along with love and affection and spent time with more than 100 residents of Nirmal Hryuday.
Kehkaha Day
A magical day spent with kids - learning from them, reliving childhoods and, inspiring them in little ways to greater heights - an indescribable experience. The event involved students of Sankalp from 4th to 8th standard. It began with a movie screening, followed by a drawing competition and a round of fun games. The event was an important reminder to prove that children, whatever be their circumstances, have immense potential, and are well on their way to becoming change makers of the future.
Wish Tree
The students of XLRI fulfilled the wishes of children from the orphanage & the elderly of the Old Age Home through a Wish Tree which had a list of wishes kept at various locations on campus.
Serving Those Who Serve Us
The students of XLRI felicitated the workers of XLRI by celebrating ‘Serving Those Who Serve Us Day’. It was an opportunity for to give back to the workers of XLRI as lunch was organized for them.
Nukkad Natak
Team SIGMA collaborated with Dracula - The Dramatics and Cultural Association of XLRI, to organize a street play during Joy of Giving week of the Jamshedpur fest at the local monthly extravaganza - Jam Street. The play was aimed at raising awareness about the JoyFest and attracted a large crowd.
