Sustainability at XLRI Jamshedpur
A Greener Campus, A Shared Responsibility
At XLRI, sustainability is not treated as a separate initiative, it is a part of how the campus functions everyday. The institute believes that excellence in education must be matched with responsibility towards our environment. Over the years, XLRI has taken steady steps to reduce its ecological footprint and promote greener practices across campus with responsibility.
Clean Energy and Carbon-Conscious Measures
To move towards cleaner energy usage, XLRIhas installed solar panels on the rooftops of multiple campus buildings. This supports renewable energy generation and reduces dependence on conventional sources of electricity. The campus also encourages sustainable mobility. Bicycles and electric scooters are made available for intra-campus commuting, helping reduce vehicle use while also making movement within campus more eco-friendly. XLRIin addition has also set up a biogas plant which supports effective management of organic waste while contributing to renewable energy generation. This reflects the Institute’s commitment to circular and sustainable waste management practices.
Green Infrastructure and Smarter Energy Use Across Campus
XLRI continues to upgrade its infrastructure with energy efficiency. One major step has been the replacement of mercury vapour lamps with LED lighting, significantly reducing power consumption. To ensure electricity is used only when required, sensor-based lighting systems have been installed in washrooms and other shared spaces inside campus. In selected areas, newer sensor technologies are being introduced to improve efficiency under different weather and temperature conditions. As part of a phased campus-wide efforts, similar upgrades are planned for more academic and residential spaces including the library to further strengthen energy conservation.
A Campus That Lives and Breathes Green
The XLRI campus is well known for its natural greenery with abundant trees, plants and flowering spaces, the campus environment supports biodiversity; creates a calm and reflective atmosphere for learning. These green spaces are actively maintained and protected as part of XLRI’s commitment to ecological balance and community well-being. To encourage responsible behaviour, single-use plastic is discouraged across the campus, and honking is not permitted within campus premises, helping maintain a cleaner and quieter environment conducive to learning reflection.
The Road Ahead
XLRI remains committed to strengthening sustainability framework through continuous improvement. In the coming future, the Institute will continue to focus on:
- Expanding renewable energy adoption
- Enhancing smart energy management systems
- Encouraging sustainable mobility and responsible campus habits among all stakeholders
- Integrating sustainability into long-term institutional planning and operations
Through these efforts, XLRI aims to build a campus environment that reflects stewardship, values of responsibility and long-term impact ensuring that growth and excellence are achieved in harmony with nature.
The solar panels installed at XLRI generates 320KW of solar energy, amounting to 14.5 per cent of the total power consumption on the B-school campus. The installation was done by Mumbai's Clean Max Solar.
